A new study suggests that extra iron for infants who don't need it might delay development -- results that fuel the debate over optimal iron supplement levels and could have huge implications for the baby formula and food industry.
"Our results for 25 years of research show problems with lack of iron. For us to find this result is a big deal, it's really unexpected," said Dr. Betsy Lozoff, University of Michigan research professor at the Center for Human Growth and Development, and the study's principal investigator.

Adversely affected children scored 11 points lower in IQ and 12 points lower in visual-motor integration, on average; the average overall score on both tests was 100. A similar pattern was observed for spatial memory and other visual-motor measures.
My eldest child had a sensitivity to the iron in the formula I had to give when I couldn't breast feed past six week because he was growing too fast and my brother in law moved into our tiny apartment and there was no place to find privacy. It causes the poor child lots of distress. The second one never got any formula, she was breast feed for 18 months until she just took up the cup and drank regular 2% milk.

If conditions permit, I'm convinced this is the way to go, Gwenny. My daughter had virtually next to no formula, or even baby food, and she's been healthy as a horse. Or is it a My Little Pony?

As am I. I mean, how can you argue with 1 million plus years of human evolution? :D

Yes. So is my daughter. And the youngest son, who was born during a very traumatic time in my life, had the added advantage of also being breast feed by another woman who I shared childcare duties with . .who ever had the babies feed them. He BARELY gets sniffles. In 22 years of life I don't think he has ever been sick enough to go to bed.
Or is it a My Little Pony?
I don't want to talk about them. ::shudder:: At least she's graduated to art grade unicorns.

Heh. Did you ever see the episode of Robot Chicken where the demented little girl captures a Pegasus and proceeds to turn it into a My Little Pony?
Hehehe.
